About Joy and Crown

Medical practices are increasingly pressured financially by rising healthcare costs and expanding healthcare legislation, and in turn respond with attempts to expand their patient base by scheduling as many patient encounters in a day as possible. But what gets sacrificed in this incessant rush to get bigger? For Dr. MaryEllen Cavalier and the staff at Joy & Crown Pediatric Specialists, the goal is not to be the biggest. Rather, the goal is to be the best—to allow enough time in a patient visit so that all the important questions get answered, so that instructions and recommendations are clearly presented and absolutely understood, and so that even the smallest patients feel safe, valued, and ready for life’s opportunities and challenges. The goal is to be a true, patient-centered medical home, from cradle to college. That is why Joy & Crown Pediatric Specialists endeavors every day to be North Texas’s premier pediatrics practice—where patients and their families are offered both expertise and empathy, convenient location and convenient scheduling and communication options, coordinated referral services with local, regional, and national leaders in pediatric sub-specialties and, most importantly, continuity of care.

The goal is to be a true, patient-centered medical home,
from cradle to college…

Meet The Joy & Crown Family

MaryEllen Cavalier, MD
MaryEllen Cavalier, MDPediatrics / Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
MaryEllen Cavalier, MD was born and raised in Porter County, Indiana (about 45 minutes east of Chicago). After having been home schooled for junior high and high school, Mary Ellen earned a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Valparaiso University (also in Porter County) before moving to Indianapolis to attend medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine.

MaryEllen Cavalier earned her M.D. and completed her residency in Pediatrics at Indiana University/James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. After completing her residency training, she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, also at Indiana University/Riley Children’s Hospital. Before starting Joy & Crown, MaryEllen Cavalier held faculty positions at the Medical University of South Carolina and Children’s Medical Center/University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

MaryEllen is an avid gardener and beachcomber, a pianist, and the proud “momma” to her Yorkie “fur-kid” Rudy Valentine. MaryEllen Cavalier loves classical music and singing in choirs. She also loves roses of all shapes and varieties, spending time with her family and friends, and just about everything on Masterpiece Theater.

Christine Cavalier, PhD
Christine Cavalier, PhDPractice Manager
Christine Cavalier–
Christine was very fortunate to have grown up in one of the loveliest small towns on the southern shore of Lake Michigan: Chesterton, Indiana. Like her big sister, she was homeschooled—in Christine’s case, for 11 years!—and then earned her bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University. Unlike her sister, however, Christine’s degree was in English and the Humanities. Not long after earning her Ph.D., she began working closely with Dr. Cavalier who was laying out her vision for what expert general and subspecialty pediatric care could be. As an educator and an advocate for lifelong learning, Christine is personally committed to an ongoing engagement with educational opportunities that will ensure that our pediatrics practice offers the highest level of professional, efficient, and compassionate care.

Judith “Nonni” Cavalier
Judith “Nonni” Cavalier
Judith (a.k.a., “Nonni”) Cavalier–
Over the years, Judith has worn so many “hats”: a clerk in a big bank in downtown Chicago, a stay-at-home-mom-turned-homeschooler, a small business owner, a volunteer music teacher, a foster-mom, a nanny, a receptionist in a dental office . . . and now an office assistant in her daughter’s own pediatrics practice! As a parent, Judith knows all the wonderful things that children—not just her own daughters, but everyone’s children—can accomplish. She feels so blessed to be able to watch our patients discover and hone their gifts and, in small way, encourage and support these boys and girls and their families as our patients become the young adults that they were created to be.
